September 2024: Second Hottest on Record for Crete and Aegean Islands

In September 2024, temperatures across most regions of Greece remained at typical seasonal levels, except for the Aegean islands and Crete, which experienced their second hottest September since 2010.

According to data from the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) and its network of 53 meteo.gr weather stations, the average daily maximum temperatures were consistent with seasonal norms in most areas when compared to the 2010-2019 average. However, Crete and the Aegean islands stood out, with temperatures significantly higher than usual, making this September the second warmest in these regions since 2010.

In Athens, the average maximum temperature for September was 0.6°C higher than the seasonal norm, with 12 out of 30 days being notably warmer than usual. In Thessaloniki, 16 days were warmer than the 2010-2019 average, with an overall deviation of +0.3°C in maximum temperatures for the month.

This data highlights a noticeable warming trend in specific regions, particularly in Crete and the Aegean islands, where higher-than-normal temperatures were recorded.
